Second edition of Moinho Talks addresses innovation and creativity in business

André Medina and Renato Menezes in the Moinho auditorium on Tuesday, April 4th

The second edition of Moinho Talks - an activity that is part of the Leadership for New Times program, promoted in partnership with Sebrae - brought Andrade Gutierrez's innovation manager André Medina and Viva Eventos' CEO Renato Menezes to the Moinho auditorium to discuss innovation and creativity with each other and with the participants.

Is there a difference between these two subjects? Renato Menezes says yes. "Both are very important and often confused. Creativity is linked to the process of thinking, of looking for insights in order to bring together different elements and create new concepts and business models. Innovation suggests action, it's a new action, it's directly related to entrepreneurship. Innovation is therefore putting creativity into practice to achieve results," he explains.

Culture of innovation

Both Medina and Menezes agree that the biggest challenge for organizations is to implement these concepts in practice, since this requires a new mentality, a new mindset on the part of both leadership and employees. "The central pillar," they argue, "is a culture geared towards innovation. "We need to establish a set of principles and values that, in practice, through actions, attitudes and symbols, allow people - with their different characteristics, skills and competencies - to work together to co-create new projects," says Renato Menezes.

That's why, according to him, including diversity and encouraging the creation of an environment that values the autonomy, capacity and contribution of each individual are essential conditions for organizations to innovate. "At Viva, we say that the trainee has the same right to give an opinion as the CEO. In fact, it's the search for what makes the most sense. This culture of freedom so that people can contribute their best is fundamental for companies to be able to really innovate, and quickly," says Renato Menezes.

André Medina confirms this and says that a culture of innovation is the basis of success for companies that are more competitive and differentiate themselves in the market. "We need to think of different ways of doing things, not settling for what we do on a daily basis, always improving. That's the goal we should strive for in order to solve problems in a more creative and innovative way to bring better results," he adds.

Engaging leaders and employees

Engaging employees and leaders in innovation and creativity is no easy task, but it is an extremely necessary action. Medina suggests that organizations start with the people who are most open to implementing innovation processes so that they can act as multipliers, breaking down barriers with those who are more resistant to change. "Start little by little. It takes time, it's step by step, it's an ant's work, but in the end it's what will guarantee the company's sustainability as a business."

At the meeting, the speakers also shared personal examples and the trajectory of the organizations they represent so that they became benchmarks in innovative and sustainable business models, transforming failures and crises into opportunities to do things differently and with better results. "A good crisis is not wasted". The phrase by English statesman Winston Churchill, presented by André Menezes, from Viva Eventos, summed up the main message of the second edition of Moinho Talks. The next meeting has already been scheduled. It will take place on May 4, with the theme "Business for Sustainable Development".
